1. Gestalt Computing — The Whole is Greater than the Sum of the Parts

Jeff Tash, President
Database Decisions

Paraphrasing Mark Twain, "The death of client/server has been greatly exaggerated." Contrary to media hype the Web is not the holy grail and Microsoft is not always the evil villain. The problem in this climate is that it’s virtually impossible to maintain a clear focus — the pace of change is dizzying & daunting. This one-day seminar pulls it all together: the technology; the business issues; the tools; and the management approaches Jeff Tash provides a "gestalt" perspective — the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. He ties together, in a pragmatic fashion, the natural inter-relationships that exist among objects, data warehouses, client/server, and the Web.

2. Intranet Meets Client/Server

David S. Linthicum, Manager
AT&T Solutions

Intranets are quickly becoming the largest growth area for client/server applications development. Mr. Linthicum shows you how the best of the emerging Web technology also works well for corporate application development. Learn the basic concepts behind the intranet movement, intranet enabling technologies such as CGI, Java, NSAPI, and ISAPI as well as available Intranet development tools that you can buy today and in the near future. This seminar is indispensable for anyone seeking to exploit the emerging intranet development technologies for strategic corporate application development.

3. Evaluating Data Warehousing Products and Tools

Pieter Mimno, President
Technology Insight, Inc.

One of the most difficult problems in building a Data Warehouse is selecting the right mix of Data Warehousing products and tools. The continual rapid evolution of Data Warehousing tools makes the determination of a short list of products even more difficult. This seminar provides you with a framework for understanding and evaluating the wide range of architectures, components, and tools available for data warehousing.

4. The Third Manifesto

Chris Date
Independent Consultant
Object-oriented (OO) and relational database are widely regarded as competing and incompatible technologies - in fact, some pundits have predicted that OO will soon do to relational what relational did to CODASYL a few years ago. However, OO and relational both have good ideas; instead of squabbling among ourselves, therefore, we should be looking for ways to marry the technologies together, thus getting the best of both worlds. The Third Manifesto is a manifesto for the future of data and database management systems. In particular, it provides a sound foundation for dealing with exotic new kinds of data - images, audio and video recordings, documents, and other such "complex objects" - without throwing away all of the well-known benefits of relational database technology.

5. Who's On First? Managing External Vendors

Pamela Hager, Senior Learning Facilitator
Russel Martin & Associates

As we approach the year 2000, more and more critical work will be done by external vendors and contractors. It is generally not possible to micromanage all the external vendors and their tasks, so project managers must macromanage these activities. This course provides the answers to the following: How can I estimate, manage and control external vendor deliverables? How Can I monitor activity dependencies between external vendors or between internal and external staff? How can I focus multiple agendas into a successful project completion (on time, within budget, meeting the clients’ needs)?
