Much has been said by now about the huge systems overhaul that is necessary to meet the Year 2000 deadline. But, how many organizations already have their action plan in place and know exactly how they are going to find, fix and test all of their programs in time to meet the demands of doing business in the 21st Century? Today, state and local government offices or agencies are already having trouble with automated computations into the Year 2000 and beyond. Many governments are beginning to make the effort to evaluate the scope of their Year 2000 problems and figure out how to fix them. The action plan proposed for the Commonwealth of Virginia to prepare for the Century Date Change is based on three guiding principals: leadership, enterprise-wide approach, and education. In this talk, Ms. Dillehay explains her Council's strategy for implementing the plan covering documenting the magnitude of the problem for the state, leveraging solutions that benefit the largest number of government agencies and institutions, and developing coordinated plans for implementing solutions. By attending this session participants will learn:

Review all those aspects of COBOL that you had hoped you had long forgotten. In this half-day seminar we'll be reviewing the niceties of your old nemesis the COBOL language and place a special emphasis on those portions of the language apt to be most used during a Year 2000 conversion project. We'll be reviewing both the Data Division (remember the Data Division?) and the Procedure Division, and cover important differences between COBOL 74 and COBOL II (COBOL 85). This course is intended for programmers, programmer analysts, and test analysts that will be involved in Y2K conversion projects involving COBOL source code. A working knowledge of COBOL is recommended, but not required.

Solving the Year 2000 software crisis will require organizations to embrace new technologies and methodologies. On-the-shelf software and processes that are used for routine maintenance aren't sufficient for undertaking a Year 2000 project. This workshop presents an overall framework for understanding, evaluating and selecting appropriate solutions for use throughout the entire conversion effort. Both 'end-to-end' offerings as well as solutions that address specific phases are presented. The concepts and issues described will be platform independent, but specific tools and system software examples will be primarily IBM mainframe related.

Application Delivery Strategies

In spite of the great potential for purchased application packages to resolve Y2K issues, many application packages only provide modest support for either century data change or European monetary unit requirements. In fact, while such application migrations will be the largest and most complex IT projects ever undertaken at most organizations, unless due diligence is exercised, many businesses will still find themselves uncertain as to their preparedness for this momentous affair as the clock ticks down. Based on actual implementation experience, this session sheds light on:
