DCI's Data Warehouse World
Show in New York a Huge Success
Andover, MA --
More than 5,000 high-level professionals and
information technology professionals attended
DCIs Data Warehouse World in New York, New
York, the premier event in the data warehousing
industry. The event featured an exposition of
over 70 exhibitors and an extensive conference
program.
On center stage at
the conference were the two hottest topics in the
data warehousing industry - data mining and
intranets. The technology of data mining and the
world of sports came together for one of the
keynote presentations to showcase the limitless
applications of data warehousing. Inderpal
Bhandari, a research staff member with IBM,
teamed up with Bob Salmi, assistant coach of the
Dallas Mavericks, and Steve Hellmuth, Vice
President of NBA Entertainment, Inc., to discuss
the data mining technology of IBMs Advanced
Scout and how it affects the NBA. Advanced Scout
is being utilized by a number of professional
basketball coaches to create game strategies
based on patterns in NBA game data and video.
The show also
featured the second Data Mining Gold RushTM held at a DCI/META Group
Data Warehouse World. The information used in the
Data Mining Gold RushTM was compiled by META Group,
overseen by Market Perspectives and Aaron Zornes,
Conference Chairman and Executive Vice President
of META Group. A total of 540 attendees completed
an interactive survey on pen-based computers that
provided insight to their current data warehouse
efforts and interests. This information, analyzed
by Silicon Graphics and SAS Institute, Inc., was
expected to reveal extensive demographic and
psychographic details about conference attendees.
The Data Mining
Gold Rush proved to be a success for everyone
involved, including Steve Reiss, SGI Mineset
product manager, and Mark Brown, SAS
Institutes program manager for data mining.
"The Gold
Rush competition provided an excellent challenge
for testing SGIs claim the power and
flexibility of Mineset effectively enables
analysts to quickly discover new knowledge,"
said Steve Reiss. "Working within a very
short time frame, the SGI team quickly loaded the
survey data into Informix and Oracles databases,
analyzed the data using Mineset and were able to
discover interesting nuggets of knowledge."
Mark Brown had
this to say about the Gold Rush: "SAS
Institute was again announced as one of the few
vendors to successfully complete the challenge,.
We used the data warehouse to tell a story about
what we learned from the survey data, rather than
to simply deliver the numbers."
Among the key
findings of the on-site survey:
- The average
revenue (sales) of attendee companies is
$1.26 billion.
- 89% of
attendees are actively involved in
purchasing decisions.
- More than 2/3
of attendees plan to purchase products
seen at DCIs Data Warehouse World
within 12 months.
- An average of
20% of attendees IT budget, or $1.9
million, will be spent on products seen
at the show.
