1. Employee Benefit Communication Over the Internet/Intranet
Using Java and JDBC

Cynthia Jeness, Consulting Actuary (FSA, Certified Java Programmer)
Tuesday 1:30-2:20 pm

This is a technical presentation whose target audience is the system engineer or analyst who has had experience with object-oriented programming languages like C++ or Smalltalk and who also has had experience using a relational SQL database platform like DB2. The session describes advantages of Java/JDBC over traditional development tools from the perspectives of cross-platform development and delivering applications over the Internet. Attendees learn how to implement an Internet JDBC applet or application using DB2 Version 2.1.2 or later, and how to program a JDBC application which must deal with large volumes of traditional employee data. Hear performance characteristics of JDBC compared with other language environments like C++ and REXX, and address design issues and solutions for this type of business application.

2. The Future of Multiprotocol Networking

Marcia Peters, Senior Engineer, eNetwork Strategy
IBM Corporation
Tuesday 2:30-3:20 pm

Studies consistently show that large global enterprises are very likely to use multiple networking technologies. Installing, configuring, and managing these diverse technologies increases complexity and costs. The need continues for more cost-effective ways to run any application over any network type with the quality and robustness required for business applications. This session provides an examination of these problems, and the outlook for multiprotocol networks in general.

5. Extending Your Enterprise Networking Solution

Carl Kessler, VP, eNetwork Products
IBM Corporation
Wednesday 9:30-10:20 am

The rapid pace of change being brought to corporate networks by Network Computing can be overwhelming. The meteoric rise of the Internet has presented IT executives with opportunities to extend their networking infrastructures across the enterprises and across the supply chains. While extending enterprise networking solutions, there are some fundamental issues to consider, TCP/IP and SNA, Internet access, security, host access, mobile users, administration, and on-demand Java applications being just a few. This session digs into some of these issues, and discusses options for creating extended, secure networks.

6. On-Demand Computing: Networks in a Java World

Ric Telford, Program Director, eNetwork Strategy
IBM Corporation
Wednesday 3:00-3:50 pm

The Internet has given rise to a new server-centric application model. In this model, components or Java applets are dynamically downloaded "on demand" to requesting clients. Today's networks have limited ability to dynamically adjust the underlying network infrastructure to the demand patterns of the user on the network. Response times can be erratic, as seen in Internet surfing. Other challengers include user authorization and license management for network computing products and services. This session discusses these problems as well as some of the forthcoming solutions.

7. Network Computing Untethered: Mobile and Wireless Come of Age

James Rutledge, Product Manager, eNetwork Mobility
IBM Corporation
Thursday 8:30-9:20 am

Providing reliable and efficient communications to the increasingly mobile workforce is growing in importance. Making sense of the myriad of technology options being presented to the mobile worker is a daunting task. This session describes the landscape today in mobile computing, including both "wireline" and "wireless" scenarios. Attendees learn how to develop solutions for the mobile workforce and about the key considerations when designing these solutions. Topics such as Internet/intranet access, host data access and administration for the mobile woker are discussed.

10. PDAs, SFA, and Lotus Notes Integration

Howard Getson
IntellAgent Control, Corporation
Thursday 2:00-2:50 pm

As veteran "road warriors" know, the portable is a valuable tool in the selling process. However, because of size and form factor constraints, most field reps have had a difficult time replacing their Day-Timer or Franklin Planner. Now, there are Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) that can replace the planner but lack the enterprise connectivity needed for a corporate solution — until now. This session provides attendees with the skills to integrate all of the form factors of their organizations from hand-held PDAs to Mainframes to the World Wide Web.

11. Lotus BeanMachine

Jacqueline Potus
Lotus Development Corporation
Thursday 4:30-5:20 pm

BeanMachine is an easy-to-use tool for graphic designers, Webmasters, marketing and communication professionals, and other non-programmers who want to enhance their Web sites with multi-media, special effects, smart forms, and live data through Java applets. A visual authoring tool, BeanMachine provides point-and-click ease of use with wizards that guide users through every step of authoring a Java applet. BeanMachine enables the importing and reuse of existing Java componentry, automated publish-and-package, and exploitation of the Java Beans component architecture. This session provides attendees with a live demonstration of the features of the tool.
