GUI Design for the Web

Effective Interface Design for the Internet and Corporate Intranets

Houston, October 9-10, 1997

What’s Happening

Web Technology has given us an opportunity to transform our organizations by providing a cost-effective method to improve corporate communications and distribute and share vital information. The most important component of a Web Application is the user interface. If the web-based application is too difficult to navigate or understand, the users will reject it, support and training costs will skyrocket, programmers will get discouraged and maintenance will be a nightmare. Web-based applications must be designed to effectively meet today’s demanding business needs.

This seminar covers the fundamental and key principles of successful design using Web Technology. Through this seminar, you will adopt the new GUI paradigm which includes: the event-driven mindset, user centric design, proper use and placement of GUI Web-based controls, and Website architectural modeling.

What You Will Learn

A two day class for developers, end-users and managers, the GUI Design for the Web course explains how to apply concepts of graphical design to the new paradigm of web-based development. Attendees will learn how to determine the best navigation for a Website, proper use of web-based GUI controls, and how to convert existing client/server systems to the Web, many times using their existing client/server toolset.

  • Create successful web sites from existing applications

  • New modeling techniques for architecting complex web sites

  • Create and implement in-house web standards

  • When to use each of the web form controls…and when not to

  • Effective page design techniques and when not to use frames

  • Develop complex web sites for mixed user profiles

  • When and how to effectively use Multimedia, Java and ActiveX controls

Benefits To Your Company:

  • Reduce training and support costs by using ‘open’ web technology

  • Increase productivity with a well-designed corporate intranet

  • Reduce development time by using proven design techniques

  • Gain knowledge on how to create task centric vs. Data centric designs

  • Reduce web site maintenance by learning practical HTML code re-use strategies

  • Achieve higher end-user satisfaction through deployment of a consistent look and feel

  • Effectively evaluate Web development tools

  • Reduce deployment costs by web-enabling your existing applications

After Attending This Seminar You Will Be Able To:

  • Develop effective Web-based interfaces for Corporate Intranets and Internets

  • Turn your existing GUI applications into Web-based applications

  • Select Web design tools that are right for your organization

  • Use a proven process for creating sophisticated and intuitive Web sites for business

  • Implement in-house Web design standards

Who Should Attend

  • Project Managers who are responsible for establishing or managing a web-based project

  • Project Leaders who need to know proven steps for web-enabling existing client/server applications

  • GUI Designers who need to know how and when to use the new Web controls when creating user interfaces

  • Webmasters who are responsible for managing and implementing web technology

  • Analysts and Programmers who need to know the critical aspects and limitations of web design

  • End Users who need to understand the principles of good GUI design on the Web

This class is designed for corporate or commercial programmers and analysts that are, or plan to be, involved in Web projects. Anyone concerned with developing well-designed web sites, including individuals that will gather user requirements or end-users themselves. Attendees should have a basic understanding of GUI components and navigating in a Web environment.

What Makes This Seminar Unique

At the conclusion of this class attendees are ready to immediately begin successful Web Site design. In addition, by studying real world case studies, students will be able to apply the examples and differentiate between effective and ineffective web site design.

Goals and Objectives

At the end of this course attendees will be able to:

  • Differentiate between an effective and ineffective Web design

  • Identify techniques for delivering Intranet based solutions

  • Develop a migration strategy for migrating client/server systems to the web

  • Define effective navigation models for large-scale web sites
