Improving Wi-Fi Security Of A Home Network

When it comes to setting up a wireless network at home, technology available has made it extremely easy. However so easy, people forget to protect their Wi-Fi network and do not always add passwords, encryptions, firewalls, security software or antivirus.

Wi-Fi is a phenomenal invention and its main purpose is to provide wireless access to devices. It is perfect for networking by example, using the Internet connected to a pc from a laptop and also great for using hardware such as printers or Wi-Fi security cameras without the use of wires.

Wi-Fi security ensures that data is not tampered with and that no one has access to privileged information.

Wi-Fi Safety In Home Networks

When thinking about adding Wi-Fi security, one has to consider the following. Most Wi-Fi home networks are usually an access point or router and when set up, manufacturers will usually provide a Web page for owners to record their network address and account information. Accompanying this, a login is required using a given default username and password. It is advised to change administrator login, as hackers are familiar with it because of its simplicity.

Also change the default SSID which is the name given to the routers network. For increased Wi-Fi security, although knowing an SSID name does not itself allow ones neighbours to access your network, changing it will prevent you from being an easy target. Try to disable the SSID broadcast as well. Originally designed for businesses and mobile hotspots, the SSID is transmitted by the router or access point at regular intervals. Another great tip is to control your routers built in encryption.

To further promote Wi-Fi security, one should also avoid connecting to open Wi-Fi network such as a free wireless hotspot or your neighbour's router and if your computer automatically does this, disable it.

Assign a Static IP address to your device and enable firewalls. Most routers already contain firewall capability, which can be disabled. Turn it on for greater Wi-Fi security or install additional firewall software. It is also a good idea to position the router and access point carefully.

This may seem like a trivial thing and although a small amount of signal leakage into ones neighbourhood might occur, the further the leakage transports, the easier it is for others to use it. It is far more safer to place the router in the centre of the home than windows, etc. Lastly, turn off your network when not in use for long periods. It protects your computers disk drives and sure to increase Wi-Fi security against hackers breaking in.
